about the series

Larry Berman has been educating investors on air for over 20 years. During the great financial crisis of 2008, viewer phone calls and emails convinced Larry there was a need for more in-depth investing education to help Canadians achieve better outcomes. In 2009 he began hosting live educational conferences. As there are many excellent initiatives aimed at increasing financial literacy, Larry’s conferences cater to individuals who already have a degree of money savvy and are looking to optimize their investment performance to fund their retirement lifestyle goals. Each season the event series empowers investors – addressing the building blocks of sound investment strategy, along with hot-topic subjects in the world of economics and personal finance.

Every show will include digital audience-engagement, and a crowd-sourced version of Berman’s Call, with live audience polling and Q&A using Slido technology.

To date the speaking series has produced more than 200 successful shows, reaching an audience in excess of 65,000 attendees across most Canadian cities, and raising more than $450,000 for Alzheimer’s research and Sick Kids Hospital (#EndChildhoodCancer). All shows are completely free of charge to attendees, thanks in part to the generous support of our event sponsors.

the changing climate of investing

Larry Berman has been working with ETFs since the early 90’s. Most investors had no idea what an ETF was until about 2008. New ideas in investing take time to catch on, but when they do they can change the game. The first wave of ETFs was largely focused on replacing high-cost index funds with leaner and sharper solutions that offered better liquidity. Active ETFs are not new, but have been rapidly evolving over the past 10-15 years, as the top global talent from the hedge fund and mutual fund worlds have converged on the rapidly growing ETF space.

The new decade kicks off with markets at all-time highs, the longest bull market ever, and economists divided as to whether we’re going into a prolong period of declined, or sustained prosperity. Uncertainty it seems has ever been greater, but everyone agrees that they need to make money regardless. In this unprecedented climate for investing, it’s time to consider how the new generation of active based ETFs can help your portfolio work in any weather. While it’s true active ETFs cost more to operate than pure passive ETFs (where costs are a race to zero), investors would do well to remember that it’s not what you pay – it’s the results you get that really matters (think percent alpha vs bps saved). For those close to (or currently in) retirement, what’s even MORE important is risk-adjusted performance that can give you growth with less possibility of downside that would impact your standard of living.

ESG, factor-based, smart-beta, defined outcome, long/short, and liquid alternatives will be among the varieties of powerful active ETFs we’ll explore. Each style has its place. Come out to see how these new and growing areas of ETFs can make a difference in your portfolio.
